BAICC ARTISTIC RESIDENCY OF AUDIOVISUAL CREATION

1. PRESENTATION

(S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico is a film event that highlights concepts such as film recovery and historical archives, in close coexistence with new film expressions, avant-garde and contemporary cinema. Since its inception, the Mostra has made a determined effort to promote, disseminate and demand analogue film formats, constituting a unique space within the national landscape.

LIFT is a non-profit organization of international prestige created in 1981, directed by artists and dedicated to promoting excellence in film creation through training, provision of technical and production resources and the dissemination of creations in these formats.

Acción Cultural Española aims, among others, at the organization and hosting of exhibitions, events and initiatives to disseminate and promote the cultures of Spain and the professionals linked to them, which contribute to their international visibility and the creation of networks among professionals and institutions.

This call aims at continuing a line of work that seeks to open new paths for emerging creators, facilitating the creation of exchange links with an institution of international relevance as LIFT-Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto.


2. AIM
LIFT-Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto, (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) call for a selection process to participate in a residency for the production of an audiovisual work shot in analog format (35mm, 16 mm, Super 16mm, 8mm or Super 8mm) in Toronto (Canada).


3. BENEFICIARIES
All those people born or living in Spain, with an accredited artistic career, who wish to carry out an audiovisual project in analogue format, will be able to participate in the call. Candidates must prove their knowledge of the English language in their curriculum vitae.

Applications will be submitted individually with a maximum of one application per owner. Each application will be presented in two versions, English and Spanish.


4. DURATION

The duration of the residency will be between 4 and 6 uninterrupted weeks to be chosen between mid-January 2019 and March 2019 and will be subject to the availability of LIFT facilities in Toronto. In the event of being absent during the agreed dates without pertinent justification, it may suppose the cancellation of the stay and of the aids granted in each case.

5. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS
Registration will be made through the website of the Mostra www.s8cinema.com, completing the online form and attaching the following documentation in a single PDF document (maximum 10 pages):

– Explanation of the project and motivation to complete the residency in Toronto, indicating the estimated duration and the preferred period

– Work calendar

– Graphic material providing a better understanding of the project

– CV of the applicant (maximum one page)

– Forecast of technical and production needs

– Budget

The applicants accredit the originality and authorship of the projects they present and guarantee that they legitimately hold all intellectual property rights over them, expressly exempting the three institutions convening this residency from any liability for damages that may be caused to this respect.


6. DEADLINES
Applications may be submitted until 23:59 (GMT + 1) on August 17, 2018. No application received after the deadline will be accepted.

In September 2018 the name of the selected will be communicated on the conveners’ websites.

The selected candidate will be contacted directly by the program coordinator and must confirm the acceptance in writing within 7 working days of notification.

7. SELECTION CRITERIA
The candidatures will be valued by a commission composed of a minimum of three members of the convening institutions, according to the following criteria:

– Originality, quality, innovation and coherence of the proposal (40%)
– Coherence of the project with the candidate’s career as a whole (10%)
– Adequacy of the proposal with respect to the resources provided by LIFT (20%)
– Curriculum and career of the applicant (30%)

Based on these criteria, the evaluation committee will choose one candidate and two substitutes. The decision will be unappealable. The Valuation Commission will resolve any circumstance not foreseen in these bases and may declare the call void.

By the mere fact of presenting themselves to the call, the participants accept these rules. In the event that a previously awarded application must be withdrawn, the candidate must notify it in advance.

8. ENDOWMENT
The residency will be developed in the facilities of LIFT in Toronto and includes the following benefits:

– Arranging of the round trip to Toronto from the place of residence of the artist, always within national territory.
– Medical insurance during the period of residency to be managed and hired by the resident who will be reimbursed the cost up to a maximum of 300 euros.
– 400 euros for each week of residency, for residence and maintenance expenses.
– Workspace at LIFT Toronto facilities and use of technical equipment up to a maximum of 2,000 euros for the valuation of their rent according to LIFT regulation.
– Additional aid of 1,400 euros to cover film costs, processing products, laboratory expenses and other production expenses.
– Technical and professional assistance in the project to be developed in LIFT.

The payment will be made to the beneficiary of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico as follows:

– A first payment of up to a maximum of 2,400 euros depending on the weeks of planned stay, calculating 400 euros per week with a minimum of four and a maximum of six. This payment will be made upon arrival in Toronto, upon presentation of the invoice, and applying the corresponding tax withholdings.

– A second payment of up to 1,700 euros once the residency is completed, upon presentation of the invoice applying the corresponding tax withholdings and attaching a copy of the medical insurance invoice and a report documenting the developed project. Its presentation will be an unavoidable condition to receive this last payment.

All the amounts mentioned are gross amounts to which the VAT will be applied and the corresponding tax withholdings.

9. OBLIGATIONS OF THE BENEFICIARY
The beneficiary undertakes to develop his/her project within the timeframe foreseen in his application, make good use of the facilities of LIFT Toronto, which will be exclusively devoted to the production of an audiovisual work and must adapt to the working hours and dynamics of LIFT, respecting the facilities and common spaces. The transport of the film produced during the residency will be responsability of the beneficiary.

At the end of the stay, the beneficiary undertakes to present a report documenting the development of the project, including a calendar, technical and production needs and graphic material (maximum 10 pages).

The audiovisual work produced during the residency must include the following legend in the entry credits: “film made in the framework of the Artistic Residency Programs of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico, LIFT-Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E)”.

The beneficiary undertakes to make the world premiere of the piece in the edition of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico immediately after the completion of the residency, in the month of June 2019.

The beneficiary holds the rights of authorship and exploitation of the audiovisual work, but authorizes the total or partial reproduction of the same in actions of promotion and diffusion of the residency program or the activity of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico and LIFT-Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).

10. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
The beneficiary authorizes that his/her name be cited and appear in images (photography, video, etc.) for the informative or promotional dissemination of the residency program.

The organization reserves the right to make modifications or take initiatives not regulated in these bases, provided that they involve improvements that directly affect the success of the project. The interpretation of the bases will depend exclusively on the members of the Valuation Commission.

Failure to comply with the provisions of these rules may result in the interruption of artistic residency and the payment of monthly assistance, as well as, if the Valuation Committee considers it appropriate, the reimbursement of the aid.
