Ernie Gehr, Friedl vom Gröller, Phil Hoffman and Scott Stark, protagonists of the ninth edition of (S8)
Time, structure, patterns. These are some of the principles that guide the ninth edition of the (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico that, under the title Lux Algebra, invokes the alchemical film elements that manipulate time and its structures, and that define a program with which it is completed the trilogy dedicated to film creation that the Mostra has been developing in these past editions, from the light with The New Impressionists (2016) to the material that supports the images with Objects and Appearances (2017), on the concepts of appropriation of found footage.
The 9th edition of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico starts next May 25, 2018 with an opening gala that will be the premiere in our country of the opera / oratorio Voices of Light / The passion of Joan of Arc, by Richard Einhorn, directed by Fernando Briones and interpreted by the Choir and Orchestra Gaos. The Teatro Colón in A Coruña will host, starting at 8:30 p.m., the inauguration of the Mostra, whose tickets can be purchased at Ataquilla.com, on the phone 902 504 500, at the ticket offices of Teatro Colón and at the headquarters of Afundación in A Coruña.
The premiere of Voices of Light / The passion of Joan of Arc at the opening gala of the 9th edition of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico will be the beginning of almost ten days of screenings, presentations, film performances, discussions, meetings with critics and others so many activities that will place A Coruña between May 25 and June 3 as the epicenter of the contemporary film and artistic avant-garde.
Under the title Lux Algebra, the ninth edition of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico refers to the concept of algebra – the branch of mathematics that studies the combination of elements of abstract structures according to certain rules – and that of lux – the unit of measurement of light-, with the intention of insisting on the cinema as a result of a combination of elements, and through the selection of works in which time and structure (through montage and internal construction) are fundamental. With key figures such as Ernie Gehr and Kurt Kren, and contemporary creators such as Scott Stark and Chris Kennedy (as well as two programs of historical and contemporary movies), we will break down the theme of this new edition.
Walk through the contemporary avant-garde
Another of the essential figures that will visit the Mostra is the Canadian Philip Hoffman, one of the masters of the art of the filmed diary and promoter of the educational project Film Farm, a kind of summer camp for filmmakers in which personal and experimental projects are carried out in film format, and with handcrafted and ecological processing techniques. There will be shown movies like Slaughterhouse, the work in progress of his latest film, Vultures, as well as autobiographical works such as On the Pond. From June 5 to 8, the workshop Film Farm on the Road with limited seats will be held at Nautilus in A Coruña and will be given by Hoffman, during which he will share his working methods with 16mm with the participants.
The filmmaker Friedl vom Gröller will be in A Coruña with her 16mm portraits, continuing her portentous work in the field of photography and paradigmatic examples of the interest of this iconic author concerning concepts of identity and gestures that become visible with the fixed presence of the film camera. While Pablo Mazzolo, an Argentine who has opened new ways for experimental cinema, will also be at the film’s avant-garde tour offered by the Mostra (S8) in the ninth edition.
Another essential: the seminal independent film distributor Canyon Cinema, which has been 50 years active. To celebrate that anniversary, Antonella Bonfanti, in charge of distribution in Canyon, curated a program under the title California Dreaming, which will be presented at the Mostra, gathering the work of its founders -Bruce Baillie, a filmmaker whose influence is similar to Mekas’, Anger’s or Jacobs’, and the feminist ethnographer Chick Strand- and filmmakers like Nathaniel Dorsky and her devotional cinema, Will Hindle. Charlotte Pryce and her fascinating microscopic and scientific world, or that of Mark Toscano.
In the classic section OVERFLOWS, one of the hallmarks of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Períférico, there can be enjoyed once again at the courtyard of Luis Seoane Foundation the film performances by the Colombian-German duo based in Berlin Ojoboca, who will premiere a new work in (S8), in addition to the works by Scott Stark, Pablo Mazzolo and Tono Mejuto, who will premiere Reliefs, the result of the first BAICC residence, organized by the (S8) in collaboration with Acción Cultural Española and Toronto LIFT.
